New for 2007 Travelers Science Dome at the Gengras Planetarium
Thanks to a major gift by Travelers, the Gengras Planetarium at The Children’s Museum has been transformed into a digital fulldome science theatre making it the most advanced planetarium in Connecticut. Our new SciDome system uses a single fish-eye lens and powerful computers to create video images that cover the planetarium dome. We now offer fulldome movies as well as the ability to simulate the night sky from any date and time on Earth.
Over the next few years, we will bring increased SciDome programming in astronomy as well as microbiology, oceanography, earth science, paleontology, meteorology, and even the arts to the children and families of Connecticut. At the same time, we will continue to offer those traditional planetarium programs that are still educationally appropriate for your students.
Unfortunately, to make room for our new system, we needed to retire Stella, our mechanical star projector, which had been in place since 1968. While Stella still created beautiful stars, she had lost the ability to represent the other objects in the sky, such as the Sun, Moon, and planets.
To make searching for your Science Dome program easier, we’ve cross-referenced our list of titles by grade level as well as key concepts. We’ve also included those Content Standards for Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York that each program supports.
If you prefer to read offline, download our latest Teacher Resource Guide to view registration information, a comprehensive list of grade-appropriate classroom programs, Science Dome shows, outreach presentations, and special exhibit attractions.
Use the Reservation Worksheet as a guide in planning your field trip to The Children’s Museum.
To request a printed copy of the Teacher Resource Guide or to make a reservation for a field trip or outreach program, email our Registration Department or call (860) 231-2830, ext. 44. (For reservation information for Roaring Brook Nature Center, call (860) 693-0263.)
The addition of the Travelers Science Dome continues the Gengras Planetarium’s 38 year history of inspiring and educating over a million visitors.
