Galactic Art - Astronomy Paintings

The Children’s Museum is proud to feature the space art of Rick Costello in  The Travelers Science Dome.  A resident of Manchester, Rick is an amateur astronomer and artist specializing in astronomically accurate paintings of the heavens.   Rick is also a planetarium performer and telescope specialist here at The Children's Museum.

Every star is put on the canvas one at a time and where it should be in relation to the spiral arms of the galaxy.  The larger stars are the constellation stars and the stars get smaller and smaller the further they are from us and the closer they get to the center of our galaxy.

“My paintings are an extension of my telescope.  They are another way for me to show others our place within the Milky Way galaxy. In each painting I try to show the galaxy as it really would look if we could be out in space beyond the Earth and Moon and see all the stars, the hundreds of billions of stars that are in our galaxy, “states Rick Costello.

Rick’s artwork and passion for astronomy has been featured in the Hartford Courant.   One of his paintings was recently purchased by NASA and will hang with about 100 others on display in a permanent exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center.
