Travelers Foundation Helps The Children’s Museum Bring More Science to Schools

The Travelers Foundation, funded by Travelers, has provided The Children’s Museum with an award of $20,000. Thanks to this generous funding, The Children’s Museum will help bring more science to students at select Hartford middle schools. Hartford students scored among the lowest in Connecticut on last year’s 5th grade statewide science assessment. The grant will support science literacy outreach in grades 5 through 7 through programs in the schools, classes and activities at The Children’s Museum and the Travelers Science Dome at the Gengras Planetarium, and hands-on field experiences.

Farmington Valley Butterfly Count

Saturday July 25, 2009

The Nature Center will sponsor the 16th Annual Farmington Valley Butterfly. Our Count is part of an annual survey sponsored by the North American Butterfly Association.

Anyone wishing to participate should meet in the Nature Center parking lot at 7:30 am. Participants should be prepared to travel throughout the Farmington Valley to census butterflies and may stay for just a few hours or for the entire day. Participants should be in good physical condition as walking through the fields under a potentially hot summer sun is required.

In conjunction with the Count, an educational program and walk will be held on the grounds of the Nature Center and adjacent Werner’s Woods from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm The cost for this 90-minute program is $4/person for members, $6/person for non-members. Call the Center at 860.693.0263 for additional information.
