Field Trip Overview

Field trips are a time-honored tradition in the life of a school child. A Children’s Museum field trip helps bring science to life and challenges students with hands-on exhibits and programs that are steppingstones to inquiry-based learning. A field trip generates an excitement about science that students carry back to the classroom and that teachers can build upon throughout the year. Our programs provide the spark, the interest, and the motivation to learn more.

The Children’s Museum is committed to life-long learning and the importance of an educated community. Through educational field trips, children develop a sense of curiosity and become excited about the world around them, empowering them to include museums and other informal learning venues in their lives as they grow older.

The Children’s Museum staff is committed to providing superior customer service to you, the formal educator, through a simple field trip reservation process and an environment that maximizes learning. Our classroom programs are interactive, educational, and fun! Utilizing hands-on applications, students can explore the animal kingdom, forensic chemistry, Connecticut’s watersheds, and even slime through inquiry-based learning.

Thanks to a major gift by Travelers, the Gengras Planetarium at The Children’s Museum has been transformed into a digital full dome planetarium allowing for expanded science programming. It is a wonderful tool for students to see and experience how the universe works. With the planetarium students can travel the solar system, study the motions of the sky, hear star stories, float in space like an astronaut, experience weather, ride a river of lava, look at atoms, and more. At the same time, we continue to offer traditional planetarium programs. All are educationally appropriate for your students.

Please explore these field trip web pages when planning your trip. To make choosing a classroom or planetarium program easier, we’ve cross-referenced our list of titles by grade level as well as key concepts.  We’ve also included the Connecticut Content Standards that each program supports.

If you prefer to read offline, download our latest Teacher Resource Guide to view registration information, a comprehensive list of grade-appropriate classroom programs, planetarium shows, outreach presentations, and special exhibit attractions.

To request a printed copy of the Teacher Resource Guide or to make a reservation for a field trip or outreach program, email our Registration Department or call 860.231.2830, ext. 44.  For reservation information for Roaring Brook Nature Center, call 860.693.0263.
